Had his best season, highlighted by his first Grand Slam championship at the French Open. He beat countryman Alex Corretja 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.
Also claimed the Monte Carlo Open title, beating Cedric Pioline 6-3, 6-0, 7-5.
Runner-up to Corretja in the ATP Tour World Championship final in Hannover, Germany.
1997
Finished as No. 1 Spaniard and reached a career-high six finals, winning one (Long Island).
Was ranked in the Top 10 for all but six weeks.
Reached the Australian Open final (the first Spaniard to do so since 1969) before losing to Pete Sampras -- subsequently climbed from No. 25 ranking to No. 9.
Qualified for his first ATP Tour World Championship and advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 round-robin record.
