1998

  • Completed the year in the Top 10 for the second straight year.

  • Claimed his first Super 9 title at the Paris Indoor, beating Pete Sampras in the final. Was also victorious at Antwerp, Belgium.

  • Appeared in Super 9 final at Indian Wells but fell to Marcelo Rios.

  • Competed in his second ATP tour World Championships.

    1997

  • Broke into the Top 1, winning two ATP Tour titles (Nottingham, Basel) in six finals, advancing to his first Grand Slam final and setting all-time fastest serve record at U.S. Open. Became first British player to reach final there since 1936.

  • Reached career-high No. 4 ranking with title in Bassel.

  • First British player to qualify for ATP tour World Championships -- he withdrew with a right hamstring injury.

  • Finished with 863 aces to finish No. 4 in that catagory, despite missing time with a left ankle sprain early in the summer.

    Captured his second ATP Tour title this year, defeating Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at the Tashkent President's Cup

  • Knocked off defending champion Richard Krajicek before losing to former titleist Michael Stich in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

  • Won his first career ATP Tour title in January at the Sydney International by defeating Carlos Moya in straight sets.

  • Underwent elbow surgery in March.

    1996

  • One of the most improved players on the ATP Tour, finishing with a career year-end best ranking of No. 29.

  • Quarterfinalist at Nottingham and Wimbledon, where he became the first Briton to reach the quarters since Roger Taylor advanced to the semifinal round in 1973.

  • Earned a silver medal in doubles with countryman Neil Broad at the Atlanta Olympics.

    Won his first career Grand Slam match at Wimbledon before losing to three-time winner Pete Sampras in the second round.
