Venus Williams eases into the quarterfinal

HAMBURG, Germany – Top-seeded Venus Williams breezed into the quarterfinal of the Betty Barclay Cup with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gala Leon Garcia of Spain on Thursday.

Williams, ranked No. 2 in the world and playing for the first time in a month, struggled a bit with her serve in the first set, but still had too much for the Spaniard.

After seven deuces, Williams broke serve for a 3-1 lead and never was in trouble after that. She made her fifth double-fault on set point before firing a sizzling backhand down the line to set up another.

Leon Garcia sent a forehand into the net to lose the set and never threatened Williams in the second. The American ended the match by pounding an overhead winner.

"I was a bit eager to start playing," said Williams, who had a bye into the second round."

"I was hitting my serve too high in the first set. You have to be patient and aggressive at the same time on clay, and that's what I did today," said Williams, who won this tournament in 1999.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, the fourth-seeded Spaniard who is a three-time champion in the $565,000 event, cruised into the last eight by beating Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-2.

Sixth-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium advanced by beating Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2, while Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia made short work of Magdalena Maleeva, routing the fifth-seeded Bulgarian 6-1, 6-1.
