Even with Cup, Kafelnikov still wants to play

Associated Press

MOSCOW -- Yevgeny Kafelnikov isn't quite ready to quit.

The two-time Grand Slam tournament champion said Friday he's putting off a decision on whether to retire, even though he said repeatedly that he would walk away if Russia won the Davis Cup.

Russia defeated defending champion France 3-2 last weekend to win the title for the first time. The 28-year-old Kafelnikov lost both of his matches in the final, and was replaced by a younger teammate for the deciding singles match.

Kafelnikov had surgery on a leg vein after the final.

Speaking at a ceremony where he and the other Davis Cup team members were feted Friday, Kafelnikov said he will try to get back in shape.

"The injury and the surgery which I had may affect my decision to continue or not,'' Kafelnikov said. "Too little time has passed since Sunday's final, so I haven't had enough time to think it over, weigh pros and cons.''

He won the 1996 French Open and the 1999 Australian Open and was briefly ranked No. 1 in 1999.

But he had a rocky 2002, with a 34-26 match record. He lost in the second round at the Australian Open, French Open and U.S. Open, and in the third round at Wimbledon.

After losing at the U.S. Open in August, Kafelnikov said that winning the Davis Cup would mean there "would be nothing to accomplish for me.''
