AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Top-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic beat American qualifier Robby Ginepri 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 on Thursday in the second round of the rain-plagued Heineken Open. Third-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Spain and sixth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States were eliminated. Spain's David Ferrer beat Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3, and Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty edged Gambill 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4). Seventh-seeded Guillermo Coria of Argentina advanced, beating Spain's Fernando Vincente 6-2, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil led American qualifier Michael Russell 30-0 in the first game of the third set when rain forced the suspension of play. Russell took the first set 6-4, and Kuerten took the second by the same score. |
