DOHA -- Venezuelan wildcard Maria Vento- Kabchi shocked last year's runner-up and fourth seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the second round of the WTA Qatar Open.

Tamarine, fresh from her maiden WTA title at the Indian Open last week, failed to find any form and made far too many unforced errors as she become the second seed to fall by the wayside.

Italy's Francesca Schiavone, seeded sixth, had been knocked out on Monday by up-and-coming Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

In other matches on Tuesday seventh-seeded Spaniard Conchita Martinez outplayed Croatia's Jelena Kostanic 6-2, 6-2; Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova beat Antonella Serra Zanetti of Italy 6-3, 7-6; Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja beat Croatian Silvija Talaja 7-6, 6-4; and Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya beat China's Jie Zheng 6-3, 6-2.

Vento-Kabchi broke Tamarine in the very first game to gain a psychological advantage and then held her serve to take a 2-0 lead.

Tamarine's efforts to claw her way back into the game floundered as she made too many errors.

Meanwhile Vento-Kabchi played a controlled, aggressive game, packing enough punch in her serves and returns.

She broke Tamarine again in the fifth and seventh games to win the first set.

The Venezuelan dominated her rival in the second set too and wrapped up the match in just 69 minutes.

"It was not as easy a match as the scores suggest. We had long rallies in both sets. But I made fewer mistakes and I think that made the vital difference," Vento-Kabchi said.

"My strategy was not to make too many mistakes. I know that she is a better player and that she is coming from a title victory. She is more experienced than me.

"I have lost to the eventual champions the last two years (both in the first round), but this year I managed to defeat last year's runner-up. I feel good about it and this should boost my confidence," she said.

Tamarine gave credit to her rival.

"She played well. She took all the chances and full credit to her," the Thai said.

"After playing in India for a week on a fast surface I found it difficult to adjust to the slow court here.

"I was not able to get into my rhythm. Perhaps, I was a bit tired too."

Martinez, who had beaten Kostanic in all three previous matches between the pair, gradually took a vice-like grip on their encounter.

Winner of the 1994 Wimbledon crown, Martinez never allowed the Croatian into the match.

"It was nice to start the tournament with a rather easy win," she said. "The centre court here is a bit on the slow side... it was nice to play my first match there and win it."
