Wild card upsets Tanasugarn in Qatar Open

Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar -- Fourth-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand lost in the first round of the $170,000 Qatar Open on Tuesday, beaten by wild-card Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 6-2, 6-2.

Tanasugarn, a runner-up in this tournament last year, was coming off a victory last week in the Indian Open.

"She took all the chances and full credit goes to her," Tanasugarn said. "After playing in India for a week on a faster surface, I found it difficult to adjust to the slow court here. I was struggling to get into my rhythm. Perhaps, I was a bit tired" she said.

Tanasugarn is the second seeded player to lose, following sixth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Also, seventh-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain downed Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 6-2, 6-2.

In other matches, Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova beat Italy's Antonella Serra Zanetti of Italy 6-3, 7-6 (3); Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja edged Croatia's Silvija Talaja 7-6 (4), 6-4; Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya stopped China's Jie Zheng 6-3, 6-2; Russia's Elena Likhovtseva took Zimbabwe's Cara Black 6-2, 6-4; Britain's Lucie Ahl beat Germany's Martina Muller 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3; Australia's Nicole Pratt topped China's Tian Tian Sun 6-3, 2-6, 6-3; and Austria's Patricia Wartusch defeated Arantx Parra of Spain 6-3, 6-1.
