Krasnoroutskaya advances as Martinez injures ankle

Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar -- Seventh-seeded Conchita Martinez withdrew from the Qatar Open on Friday because of a right ankle injury, allowing wild card Lina Krasnoroutskaya to advance to the semifinals.

Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion, was trailing 7-6 (4) 4-0 when she dropped out of the quarterfinal round match.

"I couldn't carry on because of the pain in my ankle,'' Martinez said. "I had two easy matches earlier in the tournament, but that was not the case in today's match. The pain, which I thought had disappeared, came back today.''

The 18-year-old Krasnoroutskaya, who beat top-seeded Monica Seles in the first round, will face fifth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva, a 6-4, 6-2 quarterfinal winner over Magdalena Maleeva.

In other quarterfinal matches, second-seeded Anastasia Myskina defeated Dinara Safina 6-2, 7-5, and Patricia Wartusch overcame a loss in the first set to beat Nicole Pratt 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
