Reached the final of Tennis Masters Series in Rome before falling 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to Andre Agassi, who did not drop a set in the tournament.
2001
After taking the title in Vienna, won his first Tennis Masters Series title in his home country at Stuttgart but just missed qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup tournament.
Won his second title of the year the week before the U.S. Open by defeating Pete Sampras in Long Island 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Won one of the first titles of the year at Auckland.
Lost in the first round at Wimbledon.
2000
Was bothered by a hip injury in the early part of the year but reached three finals during the season: Munich and Vienna plus won the silver medal at the Sydney Olympics. Lost in five sets to Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Reached the third round at the French Open and Wimbledon.
1999
Won his first ATP title in Memphis defeating Jim Courier. Also reached finals in Auckland, Stuttgart-outdoor and the Grand Slam Cup in Munich.
Secured best Grand Slam finish of career by reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open.
1998
Finished the year as the No. 1 German.
Lost in the finals at Lyon for the second consecutive year -- this time to Alex Corretja.
Advanced to the third round at Wimbledon and reached the semifinals in Philadelphia and Scottsdale.
Made his Davis Cup debut and went 4-0 in singles in two ties. Led Germany to an ATP World Team Championship title.
1997
Reached his first tour final in Lyon where he lost to Fabrice Santoro.
Broke into the top 50 for the first time in October. Ended the year as the youngest player to finish in the top 50.
1996
Made his ATP debut in Indianapolis as a wild card and lost to Sampras in the quarterfinals.
