In a decimated Australian Open draw, Thomas Johansson thrilled Swedish fans by defeating Marat Safin
3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win his first Grand Slam title.
2001
Won back-to-back titles on grass at the Gerry Webber Open, defeating Fabrice Santoro, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2, and at the Nottingham Open, defeating Harel Levy, 7-5, 6-3.
Lost in the second round at Wimbledon to young American Andy Roddick.
2000
Won his first ATP title on home soil by winning at Stockholm.
1999
Captured his first Tennis Masters Series title by defeating Yevgeny Kafelnikov in Montreal.
Missed a month of play after fracturing his left wrist on May 19. Missed another month of play due to a virus in the muscle and lining of the heart.
1998
Did not win a title but reached the finals at Rottermdam and
Stockholm.
Reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the U.S. Open, losing to eventual finalist Mark Philippoussis, 12-10, in a fifth set tiebreaker after holding three match points. It was just the third time in his career he advanced past the second round at a Grand Slam tournament in 14 appearances.
1997
Enjoyed his best career season by winning his first ATP Tour title -- at Copenhagen -- and repeating the performance the following week at St. Petersburg.
Reached personal highs in year-end ranking (39), singles match victories (32) and prize money ($363,967).
1996
Reached Wolfsburg Challenger final and broke into the Top 100 (95) for the first time.
Reached the fourth round at Wimbledon -- his best showing ever at a Grand Slam.
