In a decimated Australian Open draw, Thomas Johansson thrilled Swedish fans by defeating Marat Safin 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win his first Grand Slam title.

2001

  • Won back-to-back titles on grass at the Gerry Webber Open, defeating Fabrice Santoro, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2, and at the Nottingham Open, defeating Harel Levy, 7-5, 6-3.
