Career Highlights

2001

  • Retired from the tour after the 2001 Tour Championships.

  • Reached the final in Paris before falling to Amelie Mauresmo 7-6 (2), 6-1. Also reached the final in Strasbourg where she lost to Silvia Farina Elia 7-5, 0-6, 6-4.

  • Did not play in the Australian Open due to an injury. Lost in the second round of the French Open to Virginie Razzano. Reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before losing to eventual runner-up Justine Henin.

    2000

  • Won two singles titles. At the Estoril Open, she defeated Nathalie Dechy 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, to win her first title of the year. She also won the Polish Open by defeating Gala Leon Garcia 7-6 (4), 6-3.

    1999

  • Reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the first time.

  • Reached the quarterfinals in San Diego and the semifinals at Filderstadt and Leipzig.

  • Qualified for the season-ending tournament where she upset Julie Halard-Decugis in the first round.

    1998

  • Reached third career Grand Slam semifinal at Australian Open as the No. 10 seed. Came back after being down 1-4 in both the second and third sets to beat third seed Amanda Coetzer in fourth round. Defeated seventh seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the quarterfinals before falling to world No. 1 Martina Hingis in three sets.

  • Underwent foot surgery in April 1998 for an Achilles' tendon injury and was out four months, missing Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

  • In second tournament back from foot injury, upset Amanda Coetzer at Canadian Open to reach the quarterfinals; following week in New Haven, upset 10th-ranked Patty Schnyder to reach the quarterfinals and returned to the world's Top 20 in the rankings.

  • Reached first semifinal after returning to action from foot surgery at Princess Cup in Tokyo, falling in three sets to top seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

    1997

  • Lost to top-ranked Martina Hingis twice this year. The first defeat came in the semifinals of the Pan Pacific Open and the second came a week later in the finals of the Open Gaz de France

  • Has yet to find her way to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event this year. She has advanced to the quarterfinals in only one of her last eight tournaments
