Hardest part of her year might have been staying healthy -- suffered a back injury and was forced to retire during a semifinal match in Linz in February 1998; in March 1998, withdrew from Indian Wells and Lipton with bronchitis; withdrew from Fall tournaments with a right shoulder injury.
Best finish was the semifinals at the Pan Pacific Open and the EA-Generali Open.
Came back from down 1-3 in the final set to defeat sixth-ranked Conchita Martinez to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open, her first win over a Top 10 player this year and her first time winning five consecutive matches since winning Roland Garros a year earlier. Lost to Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals.

Defeated top-seeded Martina Hingis in straight sets to claim her first Grand Slam title with a victory at the French Open. Majoli reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in both 1995 and 1996, but she had never advanced as far as the semifinals at a Grand Slam event before this year
