  • Began the year with her second career WTA Tour title in Australia when she defeated top-seeded Mary Pierce of France 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships.

  • Made it to the semifinals of the adidas International before falling to Lindsay Davenport 2-6, 3-6.

    1998

  • Scored the biggest win of her career at the U.S. Open, defeating five-time champion Steffi Graf to reach her second Grand Slam quarterfinal.

  • At her first tournament after the Open, the Grand Slam Cup, fell to No. 5 Venus Williams in the final in three sets. With the $400,000 runner-up prize, joined the Million Dollar Club in career prize money.

  • Cracked into the world's Top 10 rankings on August 10, at No. 10.

  • Collected her first Tour title in Hobart, defeating top seed Dominique Van Roost in the hard court final.

  • Scored her second title of the year and of her career at Hannover,beating top seed Jana Novotna.

  • Captured a third title on a third surface in Madrid, a clay court event, defeating second seed Dominique Van Roost in the final.

  • Reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time at Roland Garros, losing to eventual champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in three sets. Improved ranking to a then-career high No. 13.

  • Won her fourth and fifth titles in Maria Lankowitz and Palermo, moving up to a world ranking of No. 11. After winning title No. 5, became the title leader on the Tour and the 18th woman to win five or more singles titles in a year since the Tour began in 1971.

  • Upset 13th seed Lisa Raymond to reach the fourth round of the 1998 Australian Open, equaling her best Grand Slam result to date.

  • Ranking cracked the Top 15 for the first time at Nov. 15.

    1997

  • Having never won a Grand Slam singles match, upset sixth seed Iva Majoli in the first round of the Australian Open and went on to reach the fourth round. Ranking jumped from No. 63 to 48, a career high.

  • Defeated two Top 10 players en route to the 1997 Italian Open semifinals -- No. 10 Amanda Coetzer in the third round and seventh-ranked Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-1.

  • Captured her biggest victory to date over world No. 4 Iva Majoli at Filderstadt to reach the quarterfinals.

    1996

  • Unseeded and ranked No. 107, reached first Tour final at 1996 Karlovy Vary -- her second final in two weeks after reaching the final of a satellite event in Bratislava.

    1995

  • In first-ever Tour main draw event, ranked No. 234, defeated No. 24 Irina Spirla in first round of 1995 Zurich.

  • Won three ITF Women s Circuit titles in 1995, including Cureglia, Switzerland and back-to-back titles in the Slovak Republic in Nitra and Presov for first pro titles.

  • Biggest mover in Tour Rankings -- improving 634 spots.
