Common Causes and Prevention
Content provided byProfessional Team PhysiciansFinger injuries can range in severity from a slight jam to a fracture or dislocation. They usually occur when a player catches a ball awkwardly, falls, or bangs his hand against equipment or another player.
Because little fat and muscle protects the finger and its joints, even a slight blow can result in a strain, stretched tendon, or torn ligament. All football players, but particularly linemen, are especially vulnerable to these types of injuries.
Gear
Gloves designed specifically for football players can help reduce the risk of finger injuries. There are different designs for specific positions, and most offer padding across the top of the hand and finger areas. There are open finger designs that allow for better ball control, and thermal-lined models that provide warmth during colder weather.
Taping your finger joints can provide added protection. "Buddy taping" an injured finger to an adjacent, healthy finger can also help prevent re-injury. Any taping should be done by a trained professional.
