Americans now 6-0, want sharper defense

Associated Press

CHANGZHOU, China -- Katie Smith and Sheryl Swoopes scored 19 points each to lead the United States to a 101-68 victory over France on Friday in the World Basketball Championship.

Lisa Leslie had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the defending champions, who face Spain on Monday in the quarterfinals. Dawn Staley also scored 13.

Edwige Lawson led France with 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

France kept it close until the second quarter, when Smith's 3-point shooting helped the Americans pull ahead 49-31 by the end of the half.

"It took us a quarter to really get going,'' Smith said. "I haven't shot the ball really well until today. I helped extend their defense'' to let Swoopes and Leslie get inside.

The United States is 6-0 through the second round of the tournament, but Smith said the team needs to sharpen its defense.

"We're giving up fast-break layups and offensive rebounds,'' she said.

Coach Van Chancellor praised the Americans' zone offense but faulted his team for too many fouls. Both France and the United States committed 19.

The next task is preparing for Spain's offense, led by leading scorer Amaya Valdemoro.

"They have some good players, but I'm confident our offense and defense will give them a go,'' Smith said.

On Friday, Valdemoro scored 18 points to lead Spain to an 81-67 victory over Yugoslavia.

In other games, Brazil upset Sydney Olympics silver medalist Australia 75-74 despite a 29-point effort by Lauren Jackson. Alessandra Oliveira was Brazil's top scorer with 18.

Sui Feifei scored 20 points to lift host China to a 102-55 victory over Argentina.

Jung Sun-min scored 42 points as South Korea beat Lithuania 76-70. Russia beat Cuba 81-66.
