Investigators turn case over to prosecutors

Associated Press

BIG BEAR CITY, Calif. -- A decision on whether rape charges will be filed against former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson will not be made for at least several days, the deputy district attorney handling the case said Monday.

The San Bernardino County district attorney's office received the case Monday from sheriff's investigators.

"I'm going to guess at the earliest by the end of this week," Mike Ramos said. "It's looking more like the week of Aug. 13 that we make a decision either way."

A 50-year-old woman maintains she was sexually assaulted by Tyson on July 16 at a home he rented while training in this resort in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles.

Tyson, who has said he is innocent, has since gone to Phoenix to continue training for a Sept. 8 fight with Danish boxer Brian Nielsen in Copenhagen.

"I'm going to go into this with an objective view, a non-biased view, and take a look at all of the facts before a decision is rendered," Ramos said. "It's important that we read all of the witnesses statements, listen to all of the audio tapes of those interviewed, and take all that into consideration before we make our decision."

The woman has retained attorney Gloria Allred of Los Angeles, who issued a statement Monday urging Tyson to speak with law enforcement about the matter.

Sheriff's investigators have interviewed three members of Tyson's entourage. They wanted to speak to Tyson, but his attorney declined to make the boxer available, sheriff's Sgt. Frank Gonzales said.

The lawyer, Darrow Soll, said he had conducted his own investigation and made those results available to the district attorney's office. He declined to discuss them.

The 35-year-old Tyson served more than three years in an Indiana prison after being convicted in 1992 of rape and other charges.
