WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Deland McCullough's 1-yard touchdown leap on the game's final play capped an 18-point fourth-quarter outburst and lifted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a wild 32-29 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday.
Winnipeg (5-10) entered the game in last place in the East,
while the Alouettes (10-5) had their division lead reduced to
one game over Hamilton.
McCullough's TD plunge became possible only after Montreal
quarterback Anthony Calvillo fumbled when hit by defensive
lineman Bennie Goods, allowing the Blue Bombers to take control
on the Alouettes' 2 with 18 seconds left.
After two runs went nowhere, McCullough was able to cross the
goal line, giving the Blue Bombers the victory.
"I wanted the football. I just wanted to get a chance to get my hands on the ball one more time," McCullough said.
Terry Baker's 37-yard field goal 2:42 into the fourth quarter
gave Montreal a 26-14 lead. But Troy Westwood connected from 45
yards for Montreal, which scored on a safety and a 7-yard TD
pass from Kerwin Bell to Robert Gordon.
Bell, who also threw a second-quarter TD pass of 37 yards to Chris Armstrong, completed 26-of-41 passes for 373 yards. Matt Dubuc caught six passes for 133 yards and McCullough totaled 49 yards on 12 carries.
Tracy Ham completed 26 of 41 passes for 300 yards for the Alouettes, who got 119 rushing yards from Mike Pringle.
Only 15,602 fans showed up to watch the last-place Bombers keep their playoff hopes alive. Winnipeg trails Toronto by four points for the third and last playoff spot in the East, but the two teams play each other twice more before the end of the season.
