Arnold Palmer is on the verge of a grand occasion during his legendary career.

Palmer, 70, will compete in his 1,000th tour event this week at the $1.3 million Instinet Classic. One of golf's most popular players ever, Palmer will join Miller Barber, Gay Brewer and Dave Eichelberger as the only players to compete in 1,000 events.

The King was to be honored at a ceremony prior to the start of play on the practice range of the TPC at Jasna Polana.

No longer a threat on the Senior Tour, Palmer has 70 total titles -- 10 majors -- between the two tours, debuting in 1949 as an amateur. His last win came in 1988 at the Senior Crestar Classic.

Joining Palmer in the field are several of the big names on the senior circuit, including Hale Irwin, Bruce Fleisher and Larry Nelson. Several others are in Scotland for the British Open.

Defending champion Tom Jenkins also is back. The Texan will put his title on the line at a different course, however, as this year's event moves from Avondale, Pa., to this Ivy League town.

The 7,099-yard TPC at Jasna Polana is the fourth different venue for the 15-year-old tournament, which was held at Chester Valley Golf Club in Malvern, Pa. from 1985-90 and 1992-97.
