Hale Irwin won the first of five Senior Tour events in 1999 by capturing the Nationwide Championship. He hopes to begin a similar run when the $1.45 million event begins Friday.

The winner of 25 Senior Tour titles, Irwin still is searching for his first win of 2000. He has come close three times, finishing in second at the MasterCard Championship, PGA Seniors' Championship and the Las Vegas Senior Classic.

His win here in 1999 came in spectacular fashion as he eagled the final hole from 74 yards with a sand wedge to earn a two-stroke victory over Bob Murphy.

There has not been a repeat champion in the 10-year history of the event. In fact, only one winner has managed to finish among the top five the next year; Lee Trevino was fifth in 1994 after winning the event the previous year.

The field includes Isao Aoki, who claimed his first Senior Tour title at this rain-shortened event in 1992. The victory made Aoki the only Japanese player to win both a PGA Tour and Senior Tour title.

Weather has often plagued this event. Over the last nine years, just one has been spared a delay or cancellation in either the overall tournament or pro-am events.

Bruce Fleisher, who won last week's $1.3 million Home Depot Invitational in a playoff with Hubert Green, is not entered this week. Green is part of the field.
