Sakhee triumphs in Arc

Sakhee, trained by World Champion Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by World Champion Frankie Dettori, ran clear of the field to land the seventh leg of the Emirates World Series - the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse, Paris, on Sunday.

The Arc was jockey Frankie Dettori's 100th Group One winner.
The Emirates World Series travels around the globe taking in the twelve most prestigious thoroughbred races, in ten countries on four continents. All twelve are great races and events in their own right and together they provide a global test in horse racing to establish the Emirates World Series Champion of 2001.

The Godolphin owned son of Bahri, who went off the 2.2/1 favourite, was always well placed and Dettori had a double handful as they turned for home and soon went clear of the remaining 16 runners.

The Arc was Dettori's 100th Group One winner and after the race the charismatic Italian said, "I've ridden some great horses but I've never come to a big race like the Arc and been so confident.

"Sakhee is a great horse and has come right at the right time. I said this morning that the only way this horse is going to lose is if I fall off him.

"We had a perfect draw and it was just a question of letting him go in the straight and putting some lengths between us and the others."

Dettori went on to say, "I don't know why I was so confident - Sakhee has been catching pigeons at home and would give Fantastic Light a race. It would be very tough to choose between them."

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said, "We've had some great champions over the past 8 years, but Sakhee is up among the best. He is every bit as good as any horse we've had with Godolphin.

"We will have to talk to Sheikh Hamdan regarding his next race, but he has said that the Dubai Champion Stakes at Newmarket is his target."

Aquarelliste, trained by Elie Lellouche and ridden by Dominique Boeuf, finished a six length runner up with Andre Fabre's Sagacity a further length back in third.

Dettori now leads the Emirates World Series with 30 points as he bids to retain his World Champion status; bin Suroor is on a total of 33 points, seven points clear of Aidan O'Brien.

Galileo and Fantastic Light remain in the lead with 18 points each and Sakhee is now in joint third place with 12 points along with Captain Steve, Silvano, Morshdi and Mutamam.

The next race in the Emirates World Series is the Carlton Draught Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racing Club in Melbourne on October 27, where the Andreas Wohler-trained Silvano will bid to take the lead in the series. The German challenger will have to face the brilliant New Zealand mare Sunline, who will be bidding for a hat-trick in the race.
