| | | | Listen to RPM Radio: NASCAR Now | John Kernan, host of ESPN2's weeknight RPM 2Night, hosts RPM Radio: NASCAR Now, a weekly two-hour show packed with NASCAR news, interviews and discussion. News from other racing circuits is also included in this 8 p.m. ET Friday program which generally originates from RPM 2Night's studio near Charlotte, N.C.
In addition to Kernan, ESPN's Jerry Punch and Bill Weber contribute to RPM Radio: NASCAR Now.
"I'm really excited about this, another great opportunity ESPN has given me," Kernan said before the debut show of Feb. 27, 1998. "The great relationships we've established with racers on RPM 2Night will help us. Compared to television, radio interviews are easy. All drivers will have to do is pick up a cell phone from their trailer."
Kernan returned to his broadcasting roots hosting RPM Radio: NASCAR Now. His first broadcasting job was at KFTW-AM in Fredericktown, Mo., while in high school in 1975. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, his sportscasting experience includes two years (1980-82) at KFRU-AM in Columbia, Mo., where he provided sports reports and hosted a sports call-in show. At the same time, he served as a sports anchor for KOMU-TV in Columbia.
He joined ESPN as a pit reporter in 1990, having served as a sports director at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Va., since 1983. He added his duties as host of ESPN2's RPM 2Night when the weekday show debuted in 1996.
ESPN Radio, which launched with weekend programming in 1992, is carried seven nights per week. Sports news, discussion, interviews and listener calls are aired weeknights 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and weekend nights from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. RPM Radio: NASCAR Now supplements the Friday night programming.
ESPN Radio also carries day-long updates, interviews and analysis on college football Saturdays and NFL Sundays, the weekday Tony Kornheiser Show, the NBA, and Major League Baseball. Overall this year, ESPN is offering 2,100 hours of content to more than 420 affiliates. ESPN Radio is a joint venture between ESPN, Inc., and ABC Radio Networks, which is responsible for distribution, sales, affiliation, marketing and promotion.. | |
