GAME LOG
TORONTO (AP) Jeff Frye made the Anaheim Angels pay for
underestimating him.
| | | The Jays' Jeff Frye forces out Garret Anderson at second on the front end of a fifth-inning double play. | Frye homered and hit an RBI single, and Steve Parris pitched seven
scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Anaheim 2-0 Sunday.
The Angels walked pinch-hitter Luis Lopez, who was making his
first major league at-bat, before Frye added an insurance run in
the eighth with an RBI single off Shigetoshi Hasegawa.
"It's kind of embarrassing when they walk a guy making his
first major league at-bat to get to me," Frye said. "I wanted to
make them pay."
Anaheim starter Scott Schoeneweis (2-2) allowed just three hits
through six innings before Frye ended a 0-for-16 slump with a
first-pitch homer. Frye, batting ninth, homered for the first time
since July 5, 2000.
"Unfortunately, I left a pitch up to a guy that I didn't think
could do that," Schoeneweis said.
Parris (1-2), who entered the game with a 10.45 ERA, allowed
seven hits and one walk, dropping his ERA to 6.23.
"The only thing bad about a bad start is that it takes forever
to get your numbers down," Parris said.
The Angels put runners on first and third with one out in the
fifth, but Parris caught Benji Gill stealing with a throw to first,
and Orlando Palmerio hit a grounder to end the threat.
"I saw him fake to third and I made a move," Gill said. "I
tried to stop, but I slipped, and all of a sudden in no man's
land."
Schoeneweis, unbeaten in his previous four starts, allowed one
run on five hits in seven innings. He walked four and struck out
two.
Toronto reliever Kelvim Escobar pitched the eighth, and Billy
Koch pitched the ninth for his seventh save in eight chances.
Attendance was just 23,949 on Carlos Delgado bobblehead day.
Most stadiums draw well when there is a bobblehead promotion, but
Toronto's attendance has plummeted the last eight years.
"I thought it was cool. It was funny," Delgado said. "We had
a pretty good crowd."
Game notes The Blue Jays dropped Raul Mondesi from the third spot to
fifth in the order. Shannon Stewart has gone from the leadoff spot
to hitting third, and Jose Cruz Jr. has moved from fifth to the
leadoff. Toronto manager Buck Martinez said he wants to have better
protection for Delgado, and his best pure hitter hit third. ...
Anaheim's Darin Erstad, who missed his second straight game with
back spasms, will undergo tests on his back when the Angels return
home. ... Parris entered the game having allowed 13 runs in just 10
1-3 innings.
