SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Phil Nevin is getting chances to drive runs in and he's taking advantage. Nevin homered and had three RBI for the second consecutive game to back the solid pitching of Woody Williams as the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 Sunday. Nevin is hitting .500 (15-for-30) with four doubles, nine runs scored, three homers and 10 RBI in his last seven games. "It makes my job easy when guys are on base in front of me," the third baseman said. "Every time I look out there lately, there have been all kind of baserunners." Nevin went 3-for-4, getting a single, double and homer for the third time in six games. Williams (2-3) broke his personal two-game losing streak as he allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-high eight and walked one. "I made a few mistakes today," Williams said. "But I got away with them. You go out there with some runs and it means you don't have to be perfect." Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 1/3 innings for his second save in three opportunities. Hoffman's other save was April 7 at Colorado. The Padres have won three of four, outscoring the opposition 25-2 in the victories. "We put together some good, solid baseball," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "The last couple of games we've come through with some clutch hits." Nevin hit a two-run homer off Omar Olivares (1-3) after Ryan Klesko walked in the fourth inning, to stake Williams to a 2-0 lead. It was Nevin's sixth homer this season. "He made a mistake to me," Nevin said. "I'm going to hit mistakes." Nevin drove in Klesko again in the sixth, with a double that hit the base of the right-center field wall. After a groundout, Nevin scored on an infield single by Santiago Perez. Olivares allowed four runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked three. "Olivares made one bad pitch to Nevin," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Olivares got the pitch up and (Nevin) did the damage." The Pirates scored in the eighth, thanks to one-out singles by Meares and John Wehner and Abraham Nunez's sacrifice fly. After a pair of infield singles loaded the bases, Hoffman came in and retired John Vander Wal on a pop fly to short left field. Hoffman "made a good pitch and I got beat," Vander Wal said. "We're scuffling offensively. It would have been nice to come through." San Diego added two runs in the eighth on Donaldo Mendez's bases-loaded single. Game notesVander Wal went 0-for-4, ending his nine-game hitting streak. He hit .500 (16-for-32) with seven doubles, two home runs and nine RBI during the streak. ... Klesko walked seven times in the series, including a team record-tying four times Saturday night. Klesko scored four runs after walks. ... Right-hander Kris Benson (sprained right elbow ligament), one of three Pirates starters on the disabled list, threw about 75 pitches on the sidelines Sunday. The Pirates are considering sending Benson on a rehab assignment this week. | RECAPS Kansas City 11 Boston 8
