GAME LOG
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chan Ho Park's teammates are convinced he is
going to throw a no-hitter one of these days. Bobby Abreu made sure
it wouldn't be Sunday.
| | | Los Angeles pitcher Chan Ho Park took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but then gave up a home run to Bobby Abreu.
|
Park held Philadelphia hitless through the first 6 1/3 hitless
innings and had a run-scoring double as the Los Angeles Dodgers completed
a three-game sweep of the Phillies with a 4-1 victory.
Park (3-2) allowed two hits in seven innings -- Abreu's one-out
homer in the seventh and Pat Burrell's sharp single off shortstop
Alex Cora's glove two batters later.
"When one of your guys goes out there and throws that well, it
just rubs off on the rest of the team," said Marquis Grissom, who
hit a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Park retired 19 of his first 21 batters. Scott Rolen walked in
the first inning and Gary Bennett reached on a fielding error by
rookie third baseman Hiram Bocachica -- who was replaced by Dave
Hansen in the seventh with the no-hitter still intact.
Rolen led off with a groundout to Hansen, but Abreu drilled a
3-1 pitch into the lower seats in the right-field corner to trim
the Dodgers' lead to 4-1 and keep Park from pitching the first
no-hitter by a Dodger since Hideo Nomo in 1996.
"I was pulling for him to do it," teammate Mike Fetters said.
"It was a 3-1 count, and I was hoping he would pitch around Abreu
so that he could keep the no-hitter intact. But we had a 4-0 lead,
so he went right after him because the wins come first and those
personal achievements come later. But I think he has the stuff to
throw a no-hitter at some point."
Park struck out 10 and walked one, his 10th double-digit
strikeout game in 147 career starts. The right-hander struck out
the side in the second inning and fanned leadoff batter Doug
Glanville all three times he faced him.
Fetters pitched a hitless eighth and Jeff Shaw got three outs
for his eighth save in nine chances. The National League West-leading Dodgers
won their fifth in a row and dealt the East Division-leading
Phillies their fourth consecutive defeat, following six consecutive
victories.
"We started the season very well and we're in first place right
now, so we don't have any complaints. But we just have to keep
pushing," Abreu said. "We've lost four games in a row, but that
happens to everybody. Now we get to go back home and start a new
series."
Despite the sweep, the Phillies earned the Dodgers' respect.
"I don't know if it's a dose of reality for them, but these
three games aren't going to set them back. They're going to be
fine," Fetters said.
"Larry Bowa's got them leaning in the right direction, and for
us to come in here with a sweep is unbelievable. They're sitting
there in first place in their division, so it was a good test for
us to see where we stand. And right now, we're playing pretty good
baseball."
Left-hander Randy Wolf (1-4), who pitched his first complete
game against the Dodgers last May 28, allowed four runs -- three
earned -- and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Park made it 2-0 in the fifth with a drive over Abreu's head in
right field for his first RBI and extra-base hit of the season. The
double scored Cora, who singled to left and continued to second on
Burrell's fielding error.
The Dodgers tacked on two more in the sixth. Bocachica had an
run-scoring single and Wolf intentionally walked Chad Kreuter to load the
bases.
Cora attempted a suicide-squeeze bunt and Wolf shoveled the ball
to the plate with his glove. Bennett, who would have retired Eric
Karros simply by stepping on the plate for a force, tried to tag
him and juggled the ball in the ensuing collision.
Game notes The Phillies were swept in their only visit to Los Angeles,
the first time since 1983 they failed to win in Los Angeles. The Phillies
went 0-6 in the regular season that year, but beat the Dodgers in
the NLCS. ... Park is 6-1 lifetime against the Phillies, with a
2.29 ERA. ... Bennett started in place of Mike Lieberthal, who is
0-for-9 lifetime against Park. ... Dodgers pitchers have issued a
major league-low 61 walks -- despite 17 by Park, who tied Fernando
Valenzuela's Los Angeles record last season with 124.
