The 2001 Big League Challenge will begin on Saturday from Cashman Field in Las Vegas. Saturday will feature the first two rounds of the event while on Sunday the semifinals and finals will take place.
Below are the rules for the event:
The 12 Big League Challenge participants will be seeded based on
their previous season's home run total, with the defending champion
receiving a preliminary round bye, regardless of his previous season's home
run total. In the case of a tie, the preceding season's home run totals
will be included until a seed is determined.
The top four seeds will receive a bye in the preliminary round, and
the remaining eight participants will square off with the higher seed
playing the lower seed. (5th seed vs. 12th seed; 6th vs. 11th; 7th vs.
10th and 8th vs. 9th)
The quarterfinal round will have the No. 1 seed playing the
winner of the 8th vs. 9th seeds; the second-seed playing the winner of 7
vs. 10; the third-seed playing the winner of 6 vs. 11 and the fourth-seed
playing the winner of 5 vs. 12. (note: there will be no re-seeding after
rounds)
The semifinal round will have the winner of the top seed's match
playing the winner of the 4th seed's match and the 2nd seed match
winner playing the 3rd seed's match winner.
The semifinal winners will then square off for the Big League Challenge
Championship.
The highest seeded player shall have the last at-bat in each inning.
The preliminary, quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will each consist
of five-inning matches and the final round will consist of a seven-inning
match.
In each half-inning, every swing that is not a home run will be
counted as an out, and there are three outs per each half-inning.
If the score is tied following regulation play, one extra inning will
be played under the above listed rules. If the score remains tied after
the single extra inning, each batter will get one swing per half-inning.
This format will be followed until a winner is determined.
The on-field umpiring crew will have at their disposal the use of a
video-replay machine to help in determining a home run. The implementation
of a video review and the final outcome following such a review will remain
the decision of the umpire(s).
