Nagy pitches three shutout innings vs. Yanks

TAMPA, Fla. – Charles Nagy, who had elbow surgery last year, pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Cleveland and Juan Gonzalez hit a three-run homer during a four-run fifth inning as the Indians beat the New York Yankees 6-0 Wednesday night.

Gonzalez hit his third homer off nonroster invitee Damaso Marte in the fifth.

Roger Clemens, who is on track to start the Yankees' regular-season opener, struck out two and walked one in three hitless innings. The five-time Cy Young Award winner has allowed just two baserunners – on an error and a walk – in five innings this spring.

Alfonso Soriano, who has been filling in for injured shortstop Derek Jeter, went 3-for-4 and has hit safely in each of the Yankees' six spring games.

Jeter, who has been slowed by an inflamed joint in his throwing shoulder, took batting practice for the first time since Feb. 26 and might make his spring debut Saturday.

Garner temporarily sidelined with kidney stones
LAKELAND, Fla. – Detroit Tigers manager Phil Garner had a kidney stone attack Wednesday, but was able to treat the pain with medication in his office.

Garner, 51, did not travel with the Tigers when went to Kissimmee to play the Houston Astros on Wednesday, but he showed up at the game in the fourth inning.

Garner said it has been several years since he has had similar problems with kidney stones.

Bench coach Doug Mansolino managed the Tigers against the Astros before Garner arrived.

Pedro pleased with first outing of spring
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The setting was strange for Pedro Martinez – a nearly empty stadium and with minor leaguers at the plate. One thing was familiar – his outstanding pitching.

The Red Sox ace who draws sellout crowds to watch him mow down baseball's best hitters threw 49 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday in his first spring training outing.

The two-time defending Cy Young award winner allowed a double and triple to two of the first three batters, producing a run. But he retired all nine hitters he faced after that, three on strikeouts. He was happy with his fastball and curve and felt he could have pitched longer.

"I felt pretty good. I felt strong," Martinez said. "I was a little bit erratic but I should be OK by the next time I come out."

He wanted his first session against batters to be a simulated game and it just so happened that he was spared a 120-mile bus trip north to Clearwater where Boston played Philadelphia on Wednesday, his scheduled day to throw.

But he hadn't pitched in a game in more than five months, back to Sept. 26 when he beat the White Sox in Chicago. He had thrown off a mound just four times in spring training.

"I would say I was pretty good today considering the time away," Martinez said. "I wanted to just play it safe and whatever I was doing wrong, do it here in practice and, by the time I face a real batter, I'm a little bit sharper."

Boston's bus pulls out without Everett
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Carl Everett needed just two weeks of spring training to get in trouble again.

He missed the Boston Red Sox team bus Wednesday morning when it made the 120-mile trip, lasting more than two hours, from Fort Myers to Clearwater for a game against Philadelphia.

Red Sox manager Jimy Williams, who had several run-ins with Everett last season, said, "The bus was there and he wasn't on it."

He didn't say why Everett missed the 7:45 a.m. departure or whether he will be punished. He did say the center fielder will make the 90-mile trip to Bradenton for Thursday's game with Pittsburgh.

"I've spoken to Carl and we will keep it in-house," Williams said after a closed-door meeting with his coaches and Red Sox special assistant Lee Thomas following the 9-8 win over the Phillies.

Trot Nixon, who replaced Everett in center, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer that tied the game at 6 in the ninth.

D-Backs' Miller out 5-7 days with broken finger
TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Damian Miller will be sidelined for five to seven days because of a broken bone in his left index finger.

Miller had sat out two games with a sore finger before X-rays revealed the fracture. He didn't accompany the team to Peoria for Arizona's game against Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Manager Bob Brenly said Miller would have been able to play had it been a regular season game, but saw no reason to risk an additional injury in spring training.
