Boston's Everett misses bus to game

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Carl Everett needed just two weeks of spring training to get in trouble again.

He missed the Boston Red Sox team bus Wednesday morning when it made the 120-mile trip from Fort Myers to Clearwater for a game against Philadelphia.

Red Sox manager Jimy Williams, who had several run-ins with Everett last season, said, "The bus was there and he wasn't on it."

He didn't say why Everett missed the 7:45 a.m. departure or whether he will be punished. He did say the center fielder will make the 90-mile trip to Bradenton for Thursday's game with Pittsburgh.

"I've spoken to Carl and we will keep it in-house," Williams said after a closed-door meeting with his coaches and Red Sox special assistant Lee Thomas following the 9-8 win over the Phillies.

Trot Nixon, who replaced Everett in center, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer that tied the game at 6 in the ninth.

"We are going to just move forward," Williams said. "We have to put the interests of the team first."

Last year, Everett said in the Red Sox clubhouse that he never liked Williams. He irritated the manager late in the season when he showed up late for an important game against Cleveland.

That's the day that Everett, who occasionally showed up late, got into a clubhouse argument with outfielder Darren Lewis and the two were separated.

Everett said he was hurt that day and couldn't play anyway, and Williams was upset that general manager Dan Duquette sided with Everett.

Williams and Everett tried to clear the air when they met last December at baseball's winter meetings in Dallas.

"We got our views out," Everett said on Feb. 28, the day of the first full-squad spring training workout. "We wanted to understand how can we help one another, and that's what we expressed."

Williams tried to put last year's problems behind him.

"My relationship has always been good with Carl," Williams said last month.

Everett was on his good behavior until Wednesday. He patiently signed autographs, once doing it for nearly two hours, during the first 10 days of training camp.

He also has been pleasant with reporters.

"Every year's a fresh start," Everett had said. "You have to get along, regardless."
