| Jeter leaves with quadriceps tightness | |||||
| KISSIMMEE, Fla. New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter
left Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves after the top of the
third inning with a tight right quadriceps.
Jeter was playing in just his fifth game this spring. He missed
eight games with a shoulder injury and another with viral infection
in his throat.
Jeter went 1-for-2. He singled and scored in the third and was
replaced by Alfonson Soriano in the bottom of the inning.
Mussina says he's fine: Mike Mussina, who left his last start for the
Yankees with a bruise inside his left knee, expects to take his
turn in the rotation Tuesday.
"I can't see why I won't," he said Friday. "I'm walking fine.
There's very little swelling, and it's not even in my knee."
Mussina was hit in the leg by Alex Gonzalez's one-hopper in the
second inning of Thursday night's game against Toronto. The
right-hander said he likely would have stayed in game if it was
during the regular season.
"If it would have been bad, it would have hurt walking,"
Mussina said.
Mussina treated the injury with ice Thursday night. No X-rays
were required.
"He's fine," manager Joe Torre said Friday. "He was walking
without a limp. No limp is good news. I don't anticipate he'll miss
anything other than the number of pitches he threw last night."
Mussina, who threw 26 of 33 pitches for strikes before departing
after 1 2/3 scoreless innings, was scheduled to throw 60-65
pitches. He allowed two hits.
Big Mac, Edmonds go deep for Cards JUPITER, Fla. Mark McGwire and Jim Edmonds make a great pair. The two, who homered in the same game nine times last season, connected Friday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 10-5. "I hope we can do it about 100 more times," Edmonds said. McGwire's two-run homer in the fourth off Jose Santiago was his third homer of the spring and gave the Cardinals a 7-5 lead as they won their sixth straight. Edmonds hit a three-run, opposite-field drive in the first off Dan Reichert, his second of the spring. Edmonds had been batting .200 with six RBI -- all against Houston on March 6. "I'm usually hitting .600 and it doesn't matter," Edmonds said. "It is kind of different, though. It's weird to go up there feeling so good and not be able to do the right thing." Edmonds, who had a career-best 42 homers and 108 RBI last year, said the major reason for his low average this spring is he's been trying to pull the ball. "I haven't been getting pitches to pull and I've kind of been struggling with it," he said. "I've been swinging too hard, trying to hit home runs. Today, I just tried to relax." Everett, Red Sox top Pirates BRADENTON, Fla. Chris Stynes, Carl Everett and Mike Lansing hit solo homers off Pittsburgh starter Bronson Arroyo and the Boston Red Sox beat the Pirates 8-6 Friday. Morgan Burkhart added a two-run homer off reliever Josias Manzanillo as the Red Sox had four homers among their 13 hits -- the fifth successive game the Pirates' injury-depleted staff has allowed 10 or more hits. A strong wind blowing out to dead center at McKechnie Field -- spring training's equivalent to Wrigley Field -- certainly helped the Red Sox, who have a number of hitters batting in the low .200s. "We hit some balls good, real good," manager Jimy Williams said. "I don't think the wind had anything to do with Everett's home run." Lansing came into the game hitting .120 and Everett was at .233. Dante Bichette went 0-for-3 and is at .200. Reggie Sanders says flat tire caused Wednesday's absence PHOENIX Reggie Sanders says he missed Wednesday's exhibition game against Milwaukee because of a flat tire. Sanders rejoined the Diamondbacks on Thursday but was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a split squad loss to the Chicago Cubs. In his absence a day earlier, the Brewers beat Arizona 16-5. The Diamondbacks' spring training home is Tucson, about 100 miles south of Phoenix. Wednesday's game was at the Brewers' Phoenix camp, so Sanders was driving up in his Mercedes Benz. He had a flat tire about 9:30 a.m. on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande, about 45 miles south of Phoenix. Seeking help, Sanders said Thursday, he called the car company's toll-free number for service. Connected to a center in Phoenix, he was told the company couldn't help because the flat occurred more than 30 miles out of town. "You're trying to tell me I have a $125,000 car and you can't go outside (of Phoenix) to come get me?" Sanders fumed. He said that when help finally did arrive, the company didn't have the proper lug wrench. Sanders said he finally reached Phoenix about 2:30 p.m. Manager Bob Brenly planned a one-on-one discussion "just to be content" he knew what had happened. | ALSO SEE Spring report: Yanks' Mussina leaves after being hit by grounder | ||||
