Jeter to start Thursday

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took batting practice on Tuesday and is expected to start at shortstop Thursday, a team spokesman said.

Jeter has been out since Friday because of a strained right quadriceps.

Jeter missed the first eight spring games because of a sore shoulder and then sat out with a viral infection before returning March 11.

Reynolds throws off mound
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Shane Reynolds threw off a mound Tuesday morning for the first time since a December knee operation that has sidelined the Astros right-hander this spring.

"Granted, it was the first day, but it felt natural, it felt easy," Reynolds said after the workout at Houston's spring training home. Previously, Reynolds had thrown only off flat surfaces.

The All-Star missed most of the second half of the 2000 season because of back trouble, then underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee after an off-season jogging mishap.

Reynolds, 32, and the Astros expect him to join the starting rotation in late April.

Reynolds has an 86-69 career record with a 3.85 ERA. Known for his control, he has 1,160 strikeouts and only 296 walks.

Borbon OK after getting hit in forehead by line drive
HAINES CITY, Fla. – Toronto reliever Pedro Borbon was hit in the forehead by a line drive Tuesday, but left the field under his own power.

Borbon was knocked down, but bounced right back up as the ball off the bat of Kansas City's Dee Brown rolled into the third base dugout for a ground-rule double.

Borbon left the game with a cut on his forehead but no other damage, according to Toronto spokesman Howard Starkman.

Hamstring strain concerns D-Backs' Sanders
TUCSON, Ariz. – Right outfielder Reggie Sanders strained his right hamstring while attempting to make a backhanded shoestring catch of a drive during Monday's Arizona Diamondbacks-Chicago White Sox exhibition game.

"It doesn't look terrible right now," trainer Paul Lessard said after a series of tests.

The worry, however, was that Sanders missed three weeks last season with Atlanta because of a pull in the same area.

Initially, the Diamondbacks thought Sanders injured his left shoulder because he hit the ground hard while trying to snag the Julio Ramirez drive that went for a triple in the top of the ninth inning as the White Sox won 5-1.

"No more diving," Sanders said following Lessard's treatment.

Sanders, 33, was to undergo more therapy Tuesday, an off day.
