| Carlos Perez demoted to Vegas | |||||
| VERO BEACH, Fla. Carlos Perez, 7-18 with a 6.28 ERA
during the last two years, reacted with a profanity-filled tirade
when informed he will start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas.
"It's always something new here, and I'm getting tired of it,"
Perez said Monday. "They better wake up. ... I never get upset
about this job. But when I get mad, I get mad."
The 30-year-old left-hander, being paid $7.5 million in 2001,
the final season of a $15.6 million, three-year contract, is 2-0
with a 4.76 ERA in 5 2-3 innings this spring.
Perez, who had surgery on his left shoulder to remove a bone
spur last September, was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the
Dodgers on Tuesday, retroactive to last Friday. The Dodgers intend
to send him to the minor leagues on a rehabilitation assignment.
The Dodgers also said infielder-pinch hitter Dave Hansen and
third baseman Adrian Beltre have been placed on the 15-day disabled
list.
Hansen, also on the DL retroactive to last Friday, broke the
middle finger on his left hand in the Dodgers' opening exhibition
game March 2.
Beltre, who had surgery March 12 to repair a hole in his large
intestine that didn't heal properly following an emergency
appendectomy two months earlier, isn't expected to play before May.
The Dodgers have made clear their plans for Perez, at least for
now; they want him to begin a routine that will have him pitching
every five days as a starter for Las Vegas. The PCL season begins
April 5.
"We don't think he's ready, from a health standpoint, to
perform at the major league level yet," general manager Kevin
Malone said. "He's had a very abbreviated spring, and we think
it's in his best interest to continue to pitch to make sure he's
100 percent, so when he is given the opportunity at this level, he
can get people out.
"He should understand we're doing what's best for him. We have
to make the decisions that are best and sometimes particular
players don't understand it."
The Dodgers can keep Perez on a rehab assignment for 30 days.
After that, the Dodgers couldn't send him to the minors unless he
cleared waivers and gave his permission.
"I'm not going to be there a month," he said. "They better do
something. If they're going to do something, they better do it
before a month."
Perez came to the Dodgers from Montreal on July 31, 1998, and
pitched four straight complete-game victories in September -- two of
them shutouts.
