10 Questions with Ohio State LB Matt Wilhelm

ESPN.com

MOBILE, Ala. -- In preparation for the 2003 Senior Bowl, ESPN.com sat down with Ohio State linebacker Matt Wilhelm to get his take on everything from his CD collection to why there shouldn't be a playoff in Division I-A.

Matt Wilhelm doesn't want to see a playoff in Division I-A.
1. What was your best college football moment on the field?

Matt Wilhelm: That's very obvious -- it's the national championship. Players were running all over the field. It was a moment of total satisfaction.

2. What three CDs are getting the most play in your stereo?

Wilhelm: That would be the 8 Mile soundtrack, The Eminem Show and Jay-Z's The Blueprint.

3. What do you think will be the biggest difference between college and pro football?

Wilhelm: At every level you step up whether from high school to college or college to the pros, a lot more preparation and pressure goes into it. But now it will be my job and I have to approach it as such.

4. What's the best and worst part of game day?

Wilhelm: Going out for 15 or 20 minutes of warmups and then run in and calm yourself down for half an hour and then come back out and have to get ready all over again is tough. That's definitely the worst. The best part of game day is watching the final seconds tick off the clock when coming away with a win -- especially this season when we had a lot of stressful moments.

5. Do you think there should be a Division I-A playoff?

Wilhelm: I don't. I think that would get away from the tradition of the bowl games. It would be better if they reduced the number of bowl games, though. It would make them more prestigious. I don't think college football needs a playoff.

6. If you could change one thing about college football, what would it be?

Wilhelm: That's tough. I'd say the game needs to be more about the fans and all the pageantry that goes along with college football and not so much about the players and outcome. It should be enjoyed as an event not as a win or lose situation.

7. If you had to play on the other side of the ball, what position would you want to play?

Wilhelm: It would have to be tight end. I've got decent hands, the right frame and good speed. I'd fit very well as a tight end.

8. If you couldn't play football, what sport would you pursue?

Wilhelm: Basketball. I was All-State two years in high school and hoops has been my love since I was a kid.

9. What player at the Senior Bowl are you looking forward to being on the field with?

Wilhelm: Shane Walton from Notre Dame. I love the way he locks down wide receivers and talks every play. I'm also looking forward to seeing Seneca Wallace. He was so elusive and did so much at Iowa State. He'll be fun to watch.

10. What's your first big purchase after signing a pro contract?

Wilhelm: Probably like everyone else, it will be a car of some sort. I don't know what it will be yet. Dealerships are calling me around the clock wanting me to make a purchase now. But hey, give me some time. I don't want to be in debt before I even get started.
