MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching Monday's practices for the 2003 Senior Bowl:
South practice -- Jan. 13 Palmer, the Heisman winner from USC, was impressive. He looked fluid in the pocket and put nice zip on the ball. Palmer's delivery is smooth, almost effortless. He also exhibited the confidence necessary at the NFL level. Palmer started his Senior Bowl week in a perfect manner -- and the personnel people don't expect any drop-off. As for the other highly-regarded South QBs, it was some good, some bad. Simms, the Texas QB, showed terrific arm strength. The kid's got a cannon. His footwork was solid and he threw a tight spiral, but his delivery tends to include a little too much sidearm motion. Simms needs to work on his accuracy and anticipation during the week. The questions for Texas Tech QB Kingsbury revolve around his arm strength. He connected on a couple of nice deep routes, but needs to work on his velocity and elongated throwing motion. After spending much of his career in the shotgun, Kingsbury has trouble "riding the center." He needs work on the center exchange. Fargas took the spotlight at running back. He was explosive through the hole today and showed good speed. He also exhibited adequate hands in pass routes. Keep an eye on him this week. The other star of the South practice was Florida's Jacobs. The former Gator flat out caught everything. Jacobs also displayed good speed and quickness. Other observations: Southern Miss offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges grabbed the attention of scouts. At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, he proved to be a terrific athlete and stood out on the line. Georgia OL Jon Stinchcomb played a little light today and needs to prove he can anchor a line. His teammate, WR Terrence Edwards, exhibited good quickness but needs to work on his strength. UCLA tight end Mike Seidman needs to work on his quickness. Proving he can block would help his stock immensely. The Miami defensive linemen, Jerome McDougle and Andrew Williams, were much shorter than expected.
