Tuesday buzz: WRs steal the show

ESPN.com

MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching Tuesday's practices for the 2003 Senior Bowl:

North squad -- Jan. 14
Much like with the South team yesterday, scouts paid special attention to the quarterbacks at Tuesday morning's North practice. Louisville's Dave Ragone and Cal's Kyle Boller both showed off a strong arm. The Senior Bowl week will be very important to Ragone. If he performs well, he can elevate his draft status after a season competing with limited talent around him. Iowa State's Seneca Wallace had good accuracy and quick feet, but is small in stature. The Cyclone QB ran some routes with the wide receivers. Last year, Antwaan Randle El starred as a college QB before converting to WR, but Wallace is a much better passer than Randle El.

Penn State RB and Heisman finalist Larry Johnson is a back built for power, not speed. Johnson didn't exhibit a lot of explosiveness to the hole, but did break some tackles. A one-back offense would suit his talents.

The receivers on the North squad had a good morning. Utah State's Kevin Curtis showed good speed and quicks. He also caught the ball well. Curtis needs to work on his strength as he struggled vs. press defense. Notre Dame's Arnaz Battle ran nice routs and exhibited good speed. Penn State's Bryant Johnson was smooth, fast and ran fluid routes. His ability as a return man will help him. Arizona's Bobby Wade showed speed, quicks and elusiveness. Middle Tennessee State's Tyrone Calico is a tall, long-strider with build-up speed. He needs room to get going and will have to work on getting into and out of his breaks. He also dropped a few passes this morning.

Michigan tight end Bennie Joppru caught the ball well, but needs to exhibit more physical play as a blocker. Rutgers TE L.J. Smith went home with a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Arizona State TE Mike Pinkard.

Washington State DB Marcus Trufant didn't disappoint. He showed good cover skills and solid strength. Notre Dame DB Shane Walton has great instincts and awareness. He'd be a good fit for a team that plays a lot of zone coverage.

There were three offensive line standouts this morning: Wisconsin's Ben Johnson, Illinois' Tony Pashos and Iowa's Eric Steinbach.

South squad -- Jan. 14
Southern California QB Carson Palmer continued to impress at the South's Tuesday afternoon practice. He is solidifying his status as a top draft pick. Texas Tech QB Kliff Kingsbury struggled with some throws today. The big point of emphasis for him during the remainder of the week is to prove he can make all the throws. Texas QB Chris Simms threw the ball OK, but too often was locked onto his target.

Florida WR Taylor Jacobs and Southern California RB Justin Fargas, two of Monday's stars, continued to perform well. Jacobs is a class above the rest of the receivers. His speed, coupled with his route running, makes him a productive player. Fargas displayed speed and a good burst again today. He also did a better job catching the ball.

Two other South wide receivers looked better. Georgia's Terrence Edwards quickness and explosiveness allow him to separate, but his light frame is an issue. Florida State's Talman Gardner was more consistent Tuesday.

Georgia offensive lineman George Foster is an imposing 6-foot-5, 333, but lacks intensity. He needs to go hard on every snap. His teammate, Jon Stinchcomb, still needs to prove he can be a solid anchor. Florida State OL Montrae Holland was a good anchor on the line today. Hawaii's Vince Manuwai struggled some, but is learning to play with his hand on the ground.

On the defensive line, Clemson's Nick Eason is competing much better than he did during the season. Miami's trio of DLs at the Senior Bowl -- Jamaal Green, Jerome McDougle and Andrew Williams -- all were quick and explosive today.

TCU's LaMarcus McDonald stood out among the linebackers. He's an athletic player -- a good knee-bender. Hawaii's Pisa Tinoisamoa exhibited good instincts, but probably lacks the size to play linebacker.

As for the DBs, Bethune-Cookman's Rashean Mathis is a good player reacting well to the upgrade in competition. He's shown good hands and ball skills this week, but was beat deep -- bringing up some speed questions. Oklahoma's Andre Woolfolk will also need to show improvement in the speed area, as he was beat deep a couple of times today.
