Winding down toward gameday

By Carson Palmer
Special to ESPN.com

I'll try to let you in on what a day is like for players at the Senior Bowl. Wednesday was an easier day for us. We had the early-morning practice session, which opened up the rest of the day. For the first time this week, we actually had some time to relax and chill.

Carson Palmer
USC's Carson Palmer has been impressive this week in Mobile.
I got up at 7:45, grabbed something to eat and got taped for practice. The team bused over to the UMS football facility for our 9:30 practice. It was the last big practice in full pads in front of the scouts. We really got after it. The focus was on goal-line situations and we worked on a lot of quick routes.

It's been fun hanging out with Texas' Chris Simms and Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury. As the quarterbacks on the South team, we spend a lot of time together. They are great players, but they are also great people.

It's a competitive situation, but competitive in the right way. There is nothing hidden from each other. We're in Mobile to compete against each other and showcase our skills, but we also help each other out.

My goal in each practice is to hit all the passes and make the right reads and decisions. The practices in Mobile have not been as intense as they were in college. At SC, we practiced at full speed in full gear. Here you want to stay away from injuries. It's more about focusing on technique. In college, you are practicing for the purpose of winning the title or a certain game. Here, you want to win the game, but you mainly want to have fun.

It's been great throwing to Florida wide receiver Taylor Jacobs. He is the man. He and Talman Gardner will be great receivers. Really, all the players from the running backs to the O-Line are phenomenal. It would be fun to play with any of them at the next level. Justin Fargas, one of my Trojan teammates, has looked great. He's been intense and played hard every down.

We went at it until about 11 and headed back to our headquarters for the week, the Adams Mark Hotel. After lunch, we bounced around to some team meetings.

Then, we finally got some down time. I took advantage of the break with a nap. I just hung out in the room with two of my USC teammates, Fargas and Malaefou MacKenzie, for the remainder of the night. We didn't even leave for dinner -- room service did the trick.

Malaefou and I are rooming together. It's great to have a teammate and friend around to go over the day with. We talked about how we performed in practice and the mistakes we made. It seemed like we had a lot more mistakes to talk about than positive plays. I ended up getting to sleep pretty early.

One of the things I'll take away from this week is the advice of our coaches on preparation. They have stressed the importance of watching as much film as possible. You've got to be a gym rat -- hang around and soak up as much as possible.

It's hard to believe our week is almost over. I'm looking forward to Saturday's game and going against the guys from the North.

I'll be checking back in with you on gameday with some of my thoughts before, during and after the Senior Bowl.

Editor's note: USC QB Carson Palmer is keeping a diary for ESPN.com during Senior Bowl week.
