Gameday: A good finish to a great week

By David Carr
Special to ESPN.com

Dear Diary,

3:45 p.m. CT: Just came off the field from warming up. I thought today might feel different because it's an All-Star game, but it feels just like a big game during the regular season. It has that same feel and I'm ready to go play.

David Carr
QB David Carr had a productive week in Mobile.
Because of the late afternoon start, we ate brunch before coming over to the stadium. It was a lot of chicken and pasta but I didn't eat too much because I don't want to feel heavy during the game.

There's going to be a lot of speed on the field today. So the coaches said we're going to try and get the speed guys the ball early and let them run with it. Look for a play called "99 backs cross" in the first series or two where we send a couple of receivers deep.

Our head coach, Dave McGinnis, told us to go out and play like we have in practice. He said the people want to see a good show so let's go have some fun and deliver one.

As part of my pre-game ritual, I pray a lot and I tape my left ring finger so my wife Melody knows I'm thinking about her.

The worst part of the week is right now -- waiting in line under the stands for the player introductions. I'm ready to go and just want to get out on the field and get the game started.

4:30 p.m. CT: Going out for the coin toss was great. The team voted on captains earlier today and it was a great honor to be selected by my teammates. I'm pretty good friends with Illinois QB Kurt Kittner so we were jawing a little bit at each other out there about who would score first.

When our defense got the first turnover, I got really jacked up. It's amazing how much your adrenaline pumps in those situations. My first thoughts were to to score, get some points on the board. On the 3rd and 10, we ran "69 stop" which is a comeback route, but Ryan Sims from North Carolina got in there and broke it up.

5:00 p.m. CT: After that first series, I talked with my coaches and Tulane QB Patrick Ramsey about some options. I need to settle down and get a feel for the game. I sure wasn't expecting to get sacked a couple of times in that second series. It wasn't scary or anything but it's never any fun to get dropped.

I finally got some rhythm in the third series. In practice during the week I thought I established something good with Georgia Tech WR Kelly Campbell. It was good to show some of that on the field. The first pass was a "speed out" that went for 8 yards. From there we wanted to go a little bit deeper, so we ran a dig route off play action called "428 F Flat." It went for 20 yards. The drive stalled after that but I don't think I'm done for the night. It's time to get LSU QB Rohan Davey and Patrick Ramsey some reps.

When we got the ball back, you had to love the reverse from the 3-yard line. I wasn't expecting that at all. Freddie Milons is a great talent and it was cool for all the Alabama fans to see him score.

5:30 p.m. CT: The first half went fine for me. It was a lot of fun. The important part of an All-Star game is to work hard during the week -- the game is just a reward. I think our WRs really stood out for us in the first half, especially Kelly Campbell (Georgia Tech), Tim Carter (Auburn) and Freddie Milons (Alabama).

It's time to go to the locker room for halftime. It's not going to be like a regular halftime, that's for sure. I think we'll just be hanging out waiting for the halftime show to end. I don't expect a lot of adjustments or anything. The plan is to come out and warm-up because I'm definitely going to play some more. Tulane QB Patrick Ramsey will start the half and then I'll give it another go.

6:30 p.m. CT: Our guys are showing their speed in the second half. QB coach Geep Chryst let me know we would run the halfback pass for Woody Dantzler so we ran down the sideline to get a better view of the play. It's called I-Right, Halfback Pass. It's nothing special, you just pitch it back to Woody and see how far he can throw it. He did a great job on that play, I just wish we had scored. Antwaan Randle El has been getting all the pub in the game so we had to get some love for Woody.

I'm going to warm-up because I'm back in on our next series.

7:00 p.m. CT: We won the game 41-26. I'm disappointed I wasn't able to get in during the second half. It was tough when we started running the ball so the clock moved quickly. Coach McGinnis came over and told me he didn't want to risk any injuries with only 4:00 left in the game. He also told me the we did what we came to do during the week. I had a great week in Mobile. Everybody was been great down here. I think I made myself a little bit better as a player this week.

I learned this week that the NFL draft process is ongoing and it feels like it's never going to end. I'm trying to just be myself and I hope everything will work out. I found out this week that the NFL is a small network of people -- with about 1,600 players and 400 coaches -- and everyone seems to know everyone else. It was fun.

From here I go back to Fresno to work out and throw with Seahawks QB Trent Dilfer and train with Steve Sabonya, a former Fresno State coach who is a personal trainer. I may go to train somewhere else too, but I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm looking forward to the draft in April. I'm excited about it. I think I had a good week of practice and hopefully I improved myself in the eyes of these coaches and others around the league.
