DENVER (AP) -- Joe Sakic used to look up to Peter Stastny. When it comes to play-making, he doesn't have to anymore. Sakic had three assists to break the franchise record and Ray Bourque scored his 405th goal Saturday night as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-1. "Peter Stastny was one of my favorite players to watch and he was just an unbelievable player," Sakic said. "Back in the 80s everybody heard about how great (Wayne) Gretzky was, but probably the second best player in the league then was Stastny for a number of years. It's a great honor to be matched up with a guy like that." Sakic, with 671 assists, is three ahead of Stastny -- his teammate for two years when the franchise was in Quebec. "Joe is moving the puck well, he's going to the net and he is generating a lot of chances," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "When he wasn't going well, he was still playing the same, but not getting rewarded." Bourque is the career point leader for defensemen (1,531), two ahead of Boston's Paul Coffey. Shjon Podein added a goal for Colorado, unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1). David Aebischer (4-0-0) stopped 18 shots in his fourth start in goal this season. Ruslan Salei had his first goal since April 5. Dominic Roussel stopped 23 shots for Anaheim, winless in six games (0-4-2). "Dominic played well, kept us in the game long enough to give us a chance to win," Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg said. "We just didn't get anything done on the offensive end the last two periods because Colorado didn't give us any chances." Anaheim outshot the Avalanche 12-6 and led 1-0 after one period. Salei gave the Mighty Ducks the lead two minutes in with a slap shot that sailed over Aebischer's right shoulder. The Mighty Ducks squandered a chance to take an even bigger lead when Colorado defenseman Adam Foote went off for roughing and drew an additional two minutes for complaining to referee Dean Warren. Anaheim managed only two shots during the four-minute power play. Colorado tied it 1-1 at 4:19 on Bourque's second goal of the season. Roussel stopped Sakic's wrist shot from the lower left circle, but Bourque poked in the rebound. Bourque also hit the crossbar with a shot from the left point. "Alex Tanguay made a really nice pass to Joe, who shot it," Bourque said. "I was coming in for a rebound and I just slapped it in." Moments later, Paul Kariya hit the left post, the closest the Mighty Ducks came to scoring in the second period. Podein broke the tie at 2:29 of the third period, converting Sakic's perfect pass from behind the net. Sakic's pass went between the legs of defender Vitaly Vishnevski. Aebischer smothered a shot by Pascal Trepanier from the right circle with 8:45 left, but Colorado controlled the rest of the game. Milan Hejduk made it 3-1 at 18:03. "We played better, but still didn't play a 60-minute game," Kariya said. "You can't expect to beat Colorado with that kind of effort." Game notesThe Mighty Ducks managed only two shots on goal in the second period, one more than the season low. ...
