Thibault makes six of 36 saves in OT

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs lost a lot more than just a point in the standings, they lost captain Mats Sundin.

Eric Daze scored his second goal of the game with just 5.3 seconds left in regulation to lift the Chicago Blackhawks into a 3-3 tie Saturday night with the Maple Leafs.

But it was Sundin, who was the subject of concern following the game.

Sundin needed 15 stitches to close a gash on his forehead between the eyes when he was struck by a puck teammate Bryan McCabe lifted off the ice in the middle of the second period.

Sundin left a trail of blood across the neutral zone and was unable to continue.

"It's swollen up quite badly," coach Pat Quinn. "(The cut) went right down to the skull. "Thankfully, it didn't hit any nerves."

Tests will be performed on Sundin on Monday to determine if there is any bone damage.

The score was 1-1 at the time, Daze and Sergei Berezin having exchanged goals.

"It doesn't help putting your best player out but hopefully he'll be all right," McCabe said.

With No. 13 in the dressing room, the Blackhawks grabbed a 2-1 lead 26 seconds into the third period when Alexei Zhamnov slapped a rebound over goalie Curtis Joseph and McCabe, who were lying in the crease.

Toronto appeared to have the game won with a late rally that saw Darcy Tucker and Tomas Kaberle score within 32 seconds.

The Blackhawks, who were booed off their home ice on Friday during a 5-2 loss to the expansion Minnesota Wild, seemed headed for defeat again.

Tucker got his stick blade on a Danny Markov shot to deflect it past goalie Jocelyn Thibault at 12:25 of the third period.

Thibault then stopped Yanic Perreault on a breakaway, but he was down and defenseless when Kaberle outskated defensemen Boris Mironov and Stephane Quintal to get to the rebound and slide the puck into the open side of the net at 12:57.

Daze, double-shifting to take the place of Jean-Yves Leroux who went down in the game's seventh minute with a left knee injury, scored his second goal of the game with Thibault on the bench in favor of an extra skater.

"It's nice to get the last goal," said Daze, who doubled his season goal total to four. "It's usually been the other team to do that."

The game was the first of eight straight on the road for the Blackhawks.

"We were able to get a point on a Saturday night in a building where that's tough to do," said Blackhawks forward Kris King, the former Leafs player.

Toronto outshot Chicago 39-22 including 6-2 in overtime.

"We didn't execute at the important time of the game," Quinn said. "You can't afford to give up points when they're hard to come by."

Tucker was just as frustrated.

"We didn't play our best for two periods but in the third period we elevated our game and were playing well," he said. "It's tough when the other team scores with five seconds left.

"We were doing such a good job until then. To come back and take the lead, you have to be doing something right. One play at the end and they tie it up. We can't be negative. We had 39 shots on net."

Denis Savard, Chicago's assistant coach, and Joe Mullen were among the 19,305 at Air Canada Centre for the annual Hockey Hall of Fame weekend game. The two will be inducted Monday.

Game notes
Chicago D Alexander Karpovtsev missed the game with a bruised right ankle. ... Toronto RW Garry Valk went off for stitches in the face late in the second period. ...
