Holmstrom gets winner for Wings

RECAP | BOX SCORE

DALLAS (AP) -- Maybe this is the start of another streak for Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom.

Tomas Holmstrom
Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom (96) shouts to celebrate a goal scored by Nicklas Lidstrom, left, against Dallas goalie Ed Belfour and Jamie Langenbrunner (15).

Holmstrom's first goal in two months, a power-play score in the third period, gave the Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday night and extended their unbeaten streak to seven games. He also assisted on the other Detroit goal.

"It just came down to working hard to the net and hoping to make things happen," Holmstrom said. "It's always fun to play against good teams like Dallas. We raise our level of play when we do."

The last goal for Holmstrom came Dec. 18, the last of a four-game stretch during which he had seven points (three goals and four assists). In 19 games after that, he had no goals and just four assists.

Holmstrom scored the game-winning goal when he slipped the puck just under Ed Belfour's stick with 14:38 left. Sergei Fedorov's wrist shot was blocked and then Holmstrom tried a shot before scoring on his own rebound.

Holmstrom also assisted on Nicklas Lidstrom's power-play goal in the first period that tied it at 1.

Chris Osgood made 22 saves for the Red Wings, 6-0-1 their last seven games.

"It's really been a long season and the fact that he didn't play a lot in the first half was tough for him," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "It's impressive how he's come back and performed."

Joe Nieuwendyk scored on a penalty shot to give Dallas a 1-0 lead at 6:02 of the first period.

The Red Wings, who have won five in a row in Reunion Arena, took the season series from the Stars 3-1.

Grant Marshall had a breakaway with just less than 12 minutes left, but his slap shot hit the right post and bounded away from the net.

While Osgood never got a glove on that puck, he survived an onslaught of four Mike Modano shots in the second period.

"He made some great saves. That frustrates you and discourages you," Modano said. "Everything's been going in for me, but tonight I had a lot of bad luck."

Modano, who had four consecutive multi-point games, had three shots in a matter of seconds midway through the second. Later in the period, Osgood stopped another point-blank shot by Modano.

"I read Modano right and gave myself good chances to make stops," Osgood said. "I keyed on Modano."

Belfour was 5-0-1 in his previous six games, his longest unbeaten streak since an eight-game stretch two years ago. He stopped 29 shots.

Dallas missed a chance to move into a first-place tie in the Pacific Division. San Jose, despite a 3-1 loss to Minnesota earlier Sunday, maintained a two-point advantage.

Had the playoffs started Sunday, the Stars and Red Wings would have been matched up in a first-round Western Conference series. Their last postseason meeting was Detroit's six-game victory in the 1998 conference final.

"If we play Detroit in the playoffs, we'll have to come with a different game," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Nieuwendyk's second goal in four career penalty shots came 12 years, two months and two days after his other successful one. He got the opportunity when, on a breakaway during a power play, he was tripped from behind by Todd Gill.

It was Dallas' first successful penalty shot in Reunion Arena since moving there eight years ago.

Just 10 seconds into a power play, at 14:31 of the first period, Detroit got even at 1 on Lidstrom's ninth goal, assisted by Fedorov also assisted.

Game notes
Dallas left wing Ted Donato was a healthy scratch for the fifth consecutive game. ... The Stars lead the overall series 86-85-29. ... Detroit coach Scott Bowman increased his NHL career-leading totals to 1,178 victories and 2,037 regular-season games.
