EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Patrik Elias couldn't be stopped.
| | | Ryan Smyth of the Oilers scrambles to try to push the puck past Martin Brodeur, who made 29 saves for the Devils. |
Elias, bloodied when he was hit by a puck in the third period,
scored three goals, including the winner with nine seconds left in
overtime, as the New Jersey Devils extended their franchise-record
winning streak to 10 games with a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton
Oilers on Saturday night.
The Devils ended Edmonton's 10-game unbeaten streak. The Oilers were 9-0-1 in their previous 10 outings.
Elias' slap shot from the slot beat goalie Tommy Salo at 4:51 of overtime after the Devils scored four third-period goals. Elias scored twice in the third period to force the overtime.
"It was amazing the way Patrik played," Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur said. "He gets a puck in the face and the next
thing you know, he's the one scoring the goal. He's a guy we look
to get out of some jams and he did that tonight."
Elias pulled the Devils within 3-2 with a goal 1:14 into the
third period and tied the game when he scored his 31st of the
season off a scramble in front of the Oilers' net with 3:56
remaining.
"He's been great for our team all season," said linemate Jason
Arnott. "Him and Sykky (Petr Sykora) have been playing extremely
well and I'm just proud to be part of their line.
"We've played tough teams and the guys have pulled through in
every game. Edmonton's been flying so this is a huge win for us."
Randy McKay and Bobby Holik also scored in the third period for
New Jersey. John Madden scored late in the second.
Todd Marchant, Mike Grier, Mike Comrie, Jason Smith and Tom Poti scored for Edmonton, which played a tight defensive game in the
first two before allowing 18 shots in the third.
"I don't think we started especially well -- we were doing a lot
of watching," New Jersey coach Larry Robinson said. "Anybody who
paid for a ticket got their money's worth, but it certainly wasn't
a coach's dream."
Marchant gave Edmonton a brief 5-4 lead when he beat Brodeur
with a low, hard shot at 12:35 of the third.
After Elias tied the game 5, Edmonton defenseman Igor Ulanov was
given a match penalty for intent to injure when he went after
Madden.
But New Jersey's advantage was cut short when the Devils were
assessed a bench minor for too many men on the ice.
New Jersey had a brief 4-on-3 advantage in overtime, but
couldn't capitalize until Elias scored at even strength.
"We're pretty happy we killed the penalties at the end of
regulation to get the point," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said.
"It's a big point for us. There aren't going to be too many teams
that steal points from New Jersey."
Sykora had three assists for the Devils.
Game notes With an assist on Jason Smith's goal, Edmonton's Georges
Laraque extending his point streak to five games. ... Ken Daneyko
played his 1,139th game for New Jersey. He is five games shy of
tying current Philadelphia Flyers GM Bob Clarke for eighth on the
all-time list of most games played with one team.
