Isles 1-35-1-2 when trailing after two periods

RECAP | BOX SCORE

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The New York Islanders reversed a two-goal deficit and a season-long trend against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Dave Scatchard and Bill Muckalt scored third-period goals as the Islanders rallied to tie the Blue Jackets 3-3 Saturday night.

"It would have been easy to fold," said Islanders coach Lorne Henning, whose team is 1-35-1-2 this season when trailing after two periods.

The Islanders' penalty-killing unit played a huge role in the comeback from a 3-1 deficit. New York stymied the Blue Jackets on 10 power plays, including two-man advantage for 1:38 in the third period.

Islanders goalie Chris Terreri made five saves during that span. He finished with 29 saves and is 1-0-1 since being acquired in a trade Tuesday.

"The penalty killing was phenomenal," Henning said.

The Blue Jackets took a 3-1 lead on goals by Kevin Dineen and Robert Kron in a 45-second span late in the second period.

Scatchard scored his 17th goal of the season, a tip-in at 1:09 of the third period, as the Islanders closed within 3-2. Muckalt tied the game at 8:40 when he redirected the puck in the slot after taking a centering pass from Claude Lapointe on a 2-on-1 rush.

Martin Spanhel of Columbus and Steve Martins of New York also scored.

Marc Denis made 22 saves, including three in overtime, for Columbus, which is 6-1-2-2 in its last 11 home games.

The Islanders, playing the second game of a seven-game road trip, are unbeaten in their last three road games.

Spanhel scored his first NHL goal at 8:19 of the first period. Martins tied the game at 10:12 of the opening period, ending a span of 136:43 during which Columbus hadn't given up a goal.

Blue Jackets goalie Ron Tugnutt had posted back-to-back 3-0 shutouts in the team's last two games.

"We knew they were playing their third game in four nights. Obviously, we wanted to use it to our advantage," Islanders forward Mariusz Czerkawski said.

Dineen deflected a shot by Mattias Timander for Columbus to make it 2-1 at 15:26 of the second period. Dineen has 350 goals in his 17-year career.

Kron scored his eighth goal of the season.
