Ottawa picks up Martin's contract option for next year

ESPN.com news services

Ottawa Senators: Jacques Martin will return as head coach of the Senators next season after the team picked up his contract option on Tuesday.

The team also exercised 2003-04 options for assistants Don Jackson, Roger Neilson and Perry Pearn.

The Senators led the NHL during the regular season, winning the President's Trophy with 113 points. But they fell one win shy of advancing to the Stanley Cup final, losing to New Jersey in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final.

Martin will enter his eighth season as head coach, second only to Carolina's Paul Maurice as the NHL's longest-serving head coach.

Martin has a 298-226-86 record and has won an Eastern Conference regular-season title and three Northeast Division titles with Ottawa.

Martin was nominated for the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year four times, including this season. He won the award in 1998-99.

Detroit Red Wings: Forward Darren McCarty has been named the winner of the NHL Foundation Player Award in recognition of his charitable work.

The award, which was announced by the league Tuesday, includes a $25,000 grant for McCarty's charities.

McCarty established the McCarty Cancer Foundation in 1997, which funds research to fight multiple myeloma -- an incurable bone cancer that took his father's life in 1999. The foundation has raised more than $3 million in research grants.

"I am very humbled by this prestigious honor," McCarty said in a statement. "I would like to thank (team owners Mike and Marian) Ilitch and the Detroit Red Wings organization for the continuous support they have shown to me, my family and the McCarty Cancer Foundation."

In addition to his foundation, McCarty is active in Detroit's team charities, including the organization's annual charity softball game. Last summer, he also served as one of the celebrity spokesmen for the first Ride for the Team motorcycle rally.

After more than a decade with the Red Wings, McCarty continues to be a frequent visitor to local children's hospitals and hosts locker room visits for ill or disadvantaged children.

The NHL Foundation Player Award, in its sixth year, recognizes an NHL player who applies the core values of hockey commitment, perseverance and teamwork to enrich the lives of people in his community.
