Roy is coming off a stellar season with Kitchener of the OHL, with 28 goals and 78 points in 49 games. He also had three goals and an assist in four games to help the Rangers win the Memorial Cup and take MVP honors. "He's not a big guy," Sabres general manager said of Roy, who's listed at 5-foot-9, 188 pounds. "But he has a big heart. And he plays a north-south game. He goes into traffic, into places you have to go to make a difference." Thorburn is a rugged center who finished with 30 goals, 71 points and 124 penalty minutes in 64 games with Plymouth of the OHL last season. The Sabres had until Sunday to sign Roy and Thorburn. If they had not signed, they would have been eligible to re-enter the draft. Roy, selected 32nd overall, and Thorburn, 50th, are considered key additions to a young, developing Sabres lineup.
No other terms of the deal were disclosed. Bararuk, the Stars' fifth-round selection in the 2002 NHL entry draft, had 29 goals and 64 assists in the Western Hockey League this season while appearing in 66 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors. He had five goals and nine assists in 13 playoff games. During the 2001-2002 season, Bararuk appeared in 72 games with Moose Jaw, scoring 33 goals and 29 assists. |
