AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- OneWorld of Seattle improved its record to 7-0 in challenger racing at the America's Cup, defeating Prada of Italy on Saturday by 1 minute, 11 seconds.
Alinghi of Switzerland remained in first place in the challenger standings after a 25-second win over Victory Challenge of Sweden.
OneWorld, the only yacht without a loss, is in second place. It had a point deducted before the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup for a breach of protocol.
Oracle, the highly regarded syndicate from San Francisco, lost its second straight race in the four-month competition to determine a challenger for defender New Zealand.
Oracle had won its first four races but slipped to 4-2 after a 36-second loss to Britain's GBR Challenge. The British team, a big underdog against Oracle, recorded its third win from seven starts.
Oracle is in third place with four points. Tied with three points are Victory Challenge, Prada, Stars & Stripes and GBR Challenge. Stars & Stripes, the New York yacht led by Dennis Conner, had a bye Saturday.
Saturday was the last of the scheduled days for the first round of match racing. Five postponed matches will be sailed Sunday, including a key match between OneWorld and Oracle.
A second round robin will begin Oct. 22 after which one team will be eliminated and eight will progress to quarterfinals.
Mascalzone Latino of Italy, the smallest team in Auckland, notched its first win, defeating Le Defi of France. The French boat is the only one without a win.
The lead changed three times during the 18.5 nautical miles before Mascalzone rolled past the French in the shadow of the finish line to cross four seconds ahead.
Le Defi incurred a penalty in trying to protect its lead. When it had completed a mandatory 270-degree turn, the Italian boat's winning margin had become more than five minutes.
Vincenzo Onorato, the shipping line owner who is both Mascalzone's skipper and founder, said his boat broke two sails leading to the race.
"We were racing against bad luck before we raced the French,'' he said. |
