AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- America's Cup sailing was postponed for a fourth consecutive day because of strong wind, forcing organizers to double up on races the next few days.
Winds reached 40 knots Monday on the Hauraki Gulf and the yachts and crews were kept on shore.
No more reserve days are left in this part of the challenger series, and officials scheduled the boats for two races each Tuesday and Wednesday.
A forecast called for wind to fall to 15 knots Tuesday morning. If the weather cooperates, the third and fourth sets of races would be sailed consecutively. The fifth and sixth rounds were scheduled for Wednesday.
Organizers then would have five days to sail the three remaining sets of races.
The winner of the four-month Louis Vuitton Cup will face defender Team New Zealand in February.
In the early matches Tuesday, it will be: OneWorld of Seattle vs. GBR Challenge of Britain; Victory Challenge of Sweden vs. Stars & Stripes of New York; winless Mascalzone Latino of Italy vs. series-leading Alinghi of Switzerland; and Le Defi of France vs. Prada of Italy. San Francisco's Oracle had a bye.
The scheduled afternoon races will be: Mascalzone vs. Victory, Prada vs. Alinghi, Le Defi vs. GBR and Stars & Stripes vs. Oracle.
On Wednesday, it's Alinghi vs. GBR, Stars & Stripes vs. OneWorld, Oracle vs. Victory and Prada vs. Mascalzone.
In the later matches, it's Le Defi vs. Stars & Stripes, Oracle vs. OneWorld, Victory vs. Prada; and GBR vs. Mascalzone.
The second round cannot go past Nov. 4 to allow the eight teams that qualify enough time to prepare for the quarterfinals starting Nov. 12. |
