| | | Greg Maddux | Although film-goers are wild about "Harry Potter," Page 2 and our readers have some suggested changes that would have given the hit movie a more sporty look.
Last week, we took your suggestions and ours on which athletes should play key roles in the new film. After polling readers since Friday, you've come up with the following choices for our "Harry Potter" Casting Call:
| | | Ron Weasley |
| | | Craig Counsell |
| | | Jon Gruden |
| | | Draco Malfoy |
You agreed with our choice of Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux taking the title role of Harry Potter. Nearly 3,000 voters chose Maddux, who beat second place Doug Flutie of the San Diego Chargers by about 900 votes.
To portray the role of Potter's best pal, Ron Weasley, Page 2 voters chose a guy who wasn't very good to Maddux in the 2001 National League Championship Series. Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman, and NLCS MVP, Craig Counsell, picked up more than 3,500 votes to beat former tennis star Boris Becker, who was Page 2 selection, by nearly 1,000 votes.
| | | Mia Hamm |
| | | Hermione Granger |
| | | Phil Jackson |
| | | Albus Dumbledore |
Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden easily won the race for the role of Draco Malfoy, Potter's nemesis. His blond hair and menacing glare were too much for second place John Rocker. The Cleveland Indians pitcher finished about 800 votes behind Gruden.
Page 2 voters believed U.S. women's soccer star Mia Hamm was the right choice to play Potter's female friend Hermione Granger. Hamm picked up more than 3,100 votes to top tennis star Jennifer Capriati by nearly 1,000 tallies.
Page 2's choice of the Zen Master, Phil Jackson, to portray Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore was overwhelmingly popular with voters. The Los Angeles Lakers coach earned more then 4,800 votes, which were good enough to zap the Wizard of Westwood and two other candidates. Former UCLA men's basketball coach John Wooden was a distant second with more than 1,800 votes while former Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach and New York Yankees manager Joe Torre were far behind.
| | | Kyle Turley |
| | | Rubeus Hagrid |
| | | Al Davis |
| | | Professor Snape |
When we asked who should play the big, simple and dangerously strong caretaker of Hogwarts, Rubeus Hagrid, Page 2 voters decided New Orleans Saints hot-headed offensive lineman Kyle Turley was a better choice than teammate Ricky Williams or Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal. Turley picked up nearly 4,000 votes to defeat Shaq by about 1,300 tallies and Williams by more than 2,000 ballots.
Once again, being a Raider was an advantage for consideration for another nasty role. Raiders owner Al Davis picked up more than 3,000 votes to be chosen to portray Professor Snape. Texas Tech men's basketball coach Bobby Knight was next closest with more than 2,100 votes, followed by Miami Heat coach Pat Riley and New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy.
