Pope snaps tie in 84th minute

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Eddie Pope broke a tie in the 84th minute as D.C. United beat the San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 on Saturday night to snap a 10-game winless streak.

Pope scored off Marco Etcheverry's corner kick, and Petter Villegas added a goal in the 86th minute for United, which was 0-6-4 since its last win June 29.

U.S. World Cup player Landon Donovan scored twice for San Jose, which has lost six straight on the road.

Bobby Convey and Ryan Nelsen also scored for D.C., which broke an 0-5-2 streak against the Earthquakes before 14,158 at RFK Stadium. D.C., which had scored only three goals in its 10-game drought, went ahead 1-0 in the 38th minute on Convey's goal.

Working off Nelsen's takeaway deep in United's zone, Jaime Moreno dribbled to the top of the Earthquakes' penalty area. As two defenders collapsed on him, Moreno shuffled a short pass right to Convey, who sent a soft shot inside the right post from 15 yards out.

Donovan tied the game in the 49th minute with his sixth goal of the season. About nine minutes later, bulled his way past four United players at the top of the box, regained his footing and control of the ball after a slip and beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando for a 2-1 lead.

Nelson's goal made it 2-2 in the 74th minute. He almost overran a feed from Villegas before flicking the ball past goalkeeper Jon Conway.

Rimando made two tough saves -- on a point-blank header by Jimmy Conrad in the 80th minute and a hard shot by Ronnie Ekelund in the 82nd -- to preserve the tie.
