WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pu Wei headed in a corner kick from Mia Hamm
with just seconds left in stoppage time to send the Washington
Freedom to the playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Beat on
Sunday.
Washington (10-5-5) won a corner in the second minute of
stoppage time and Pu Wei squeezed her way into open space to head
the pass into the back of the net for the game-winner, giving Hamm
her second assist of the day.
Atlanta (10-8-1) outshot the Freedom 14-4 in the first half.
"When Mia comes in the second half she just gives a huge spark
for us,'' Jennifer Grubb said. "I just wish we could get her
playing like that for 90 minutes.''
Hamm was put into the Washington lineup at the start of the
second half and tied the game at 1-all in the 58th minute.
In the 75th minute, Hamm assisted on Baijie's goal, giving the
Freedom a 2-1 lead, but Cindy Parlow's header tied the game again
in the 77th minute.
