GAME LOG
ARLINGTON, Texas In his first game as Texas' manager,
Jerry Narron got the sort of pitching Johnny Oates rarely did.
| | | Alex Rodriguez turns a double play here, and also gets his 1,000th hit at the plate. |
Ryan Glynn threw eight shutout innings and Alex Rodriguez
collected his 1,000th career hit as the Rangers beat the Chicago
White Sox 2-0 Saturday night to snap a five-game losing streak.
"It's a shot in the arm," Rodriguez said. "We needed a
performance like that. Ryan pitched great and it was a clean game.
Hopefully it's the beginning of a good streak for us."
His two-out RBI single off reliever Gary Glover in the seventh
inning put the shortstop at the 1,000 mark.
"Obviously it's very satisfying when you get a milestone hit
like that in a victory," Rodriguez said. "I hope it's the first
of many victories for Jerry. I'm excited about our prospects."
It was the Rangers' first shutout since a 1-0 victory over
Toronto in 11 innings on Aug. 25 of last season.
Narron, who took over after Oates resigned under pressure on
Friday, inherited a team that started the night with a 6.72 ERA,
worst in the majors by more than one run.
But Glynn (1-3) shut down the White Sox on three hits for his
first victory since Sept. 8. He struck out three with no walks and
had 12 ground-ball outs.
"I wanted to get the shutout and I wanted to get the win,"
Narron said. "I know we've got a good ball club that's better than
we've played. It's a matter of getting something started."
Jeff Zimmerman pitched the ninth for his third save, getting
Jose Valentin to fly out with runners at the corners to end it.
Glynn, who opened the game with a 11.09 ERA, retired the first
nine batters before Ray Durham's single leading off the fourth.
Durham had three of Chicago's five hits.
Glynn was sent to the bullpen after four ineffective starts in
April, and the pitcher said he was able to make some mechanical
adjustments on his slider while he was out of the rotation.
"I was able to step back and re-evaluate, try to figure out why
I was leaving the ball over the middle of the plate," Glynn said.
"We looked at a lot of video and made some adjustments with my
slider. Tonight I had a much crisper slider. I'm a ground-ball
pitcher, not a strikeout pitcher."
White Sox rookie starter Rocky Biddle (1-2) matched shutout
innings with Glynn until the fifth, when Rusty Greer put the
Rangers in front with an RBI double.
Ruben Mateo led off the fifth with a double, went to third on a
groundout and scored on Greer's hit into the right-field corner.
Biddle allowed two runs and four hits over six innings as the
White Sox lost their fourth straight and 11th of 13.
"I showed spurts of what I've been doing," said Biddle. "I
thought I pitched well, battled hard. It just didn't work out. It's
a little disheartening."
Game notes Magglio Ordonez pinch-hit in the ninth. He struck out
looking and was ejected for arguing with umpire Marty Foster. ...
Neither team took batting practice. The infield remained covered
following a late-afternoon thunderstorm. ... A note from Oates and
his wife, Gloria, to Rangers fans thanking them for their "dignity
and class" was shown on the scoreboard during the fifth inning.
... The White Sox were without Frank Thomas, who was in Georgia to
attend his father's funeral. ... At 2 hours, 28 minutes, it was the
shortest game of the season for the Rangers. ... Glynn's eight
innings tied his career high.
