GAME LOG
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) LaTroy Hawkins finally blew a save
chance.
| | | Dee Brown's second homer of the season propels the Royals past the Twins in the 12th. |
Hawkins wasted a two-run lead in the ninth inning, and Dee Brown
hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning as the Kansas City Royals
beat the Minnesota Twins 12-10 Saturday night.
"It's inevitable that he was going to," Twins manager Tom
Kelly said. "You'd like to win 'em all, but ..."
Hawkins, 9-for-9 previously this season, converted all 14 of his
save opportunities last year. He did not speak with reporters after
the game.
Given a 10-8 lead, Hawkins walked Rey Sanchez leading off the
ninth and gave up a one-out single to Jermaine Dye.
Joe Randa then hit a sacrifice fly on a ball first baseman Doug
Mientkiewicz caught while falling into the stands. Dave McCarty
followed with a game-tying single.
"We've been scuffling lately," McCarty said. "It was nice for
us to battle back a couple of times. It felt very good to actually
contribute."
Brown hit his second home run of the season off Travis Miller
(0-1) in the 12th, stopping Kansas City's four-game losing streak.
"It just shows you how quickly things can go bad," Miller
said. "You feel like you're in control, facing the only lefty in
the lineup. You make one bad pitch, on an 0-2 count, and the game
is over."
Brown's homer came after McCarty walked with one out.
"It feels pretty good," Brown said. "I had been wondering
where my pop went. Earlier in the game I thought I got one, but
Torii (Hunter) caught it at the wall. I'm just happy to help the
team win. I was just praying that it would go over, because I
really didn't feel like going back out there in the field."
Cory Bailey (1-0) pitched two innings for his first win since
beating Pittsburgh for St. Louis on Sept. 25, 1996.
"The ball hasn't been bouncing our way a lot," Kansas City
manager Tony Muser he said. "It was a good win for us. It was a
character game. Being tied, losing the lead, getting close, tying
it up, going extra innings."
Hunter drove in three runs for the Twins, Corey Koskie went
4-for-7 in his third four-hit game of the season and Matt Lawton
was 3-for-6.
Dye was 3-for-6 for the Royals.
Mientkiewicz broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh with an RBI single
off Jason Grimsley. Minnesota added three more runs on a throwing
error by Grimsley following Jacque Jones' liner back to the mound
and Luis Rivas' two-run single.
Kansas City closed to 8-7 with three runs in the seventh. Mike
Sweeney hit a sacrifice fly, which right fielder Chad Allen
dropped, Hector Carrasco threw a run-scoring wild pitch and Dye had
an RBI grounder.
Mientkiewicz hit an RBI single in the eighth off Jose Santiago
and Jones hit an RBI grounder that made it 10-7. Luis Alicea hit a
sacrifice fly in the eighth off Bob Wells.
Kansas City, playing its fifth game of the homestand, took its
first lead of the homestand on Randa's RBI single in the first.
Minnesota surged ahead 4-1 in the third on Hunter's three-run
homer and Pierzynski's RBI double.
Kansas City tied it in the fourth on McCarty's RBI double and
Hector Ortiz's two-run double.
Game notes Of the 46 runs the Royals allowed in the first five games
of the homestand, 32 scored with two outs, including seven of 10 on
Saturday. ... With his first-inning double, Sweeney has 17
extra-base hits (four home runs and 13 doubles) among his last 23
hits. ... Twins starter J.C. Romero allowed four runs and nine hits
in six innings.
