Pirates paste Chacon in his second start
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Derek Bell's home run only padded an already lopsided score but it meant a lot to him.

Bell snapped an 0-for-17 drought with his first homer of the season, and Aramis Ramirez drove in four runs with a pair of doubles in Pittsburgh's 11-3 win over Colorado on Saturday night.

Bell's two-run shot came in the seventh inning, with the Pirates ahead 9-3. It was his first home run since Sept. 18, for the New York Mets against Atlanta, and came in his 92nd at-bat of this season.

Bell, who has been booed since opening day, received his first curtain call at PNC Park.

"It felt real good," Bell said. "It was awesome. I've been going through a lot. But I kept telling myself to stay positive and stay strong. You just keep working."

Bell had no problem responding to fans who have been riding him hard. He signed a two-year free-agent deal worth about $10 million last winter and came into Saturday's game with a .133 average and two RBIs.

"They want me to do well," Bell said. "I felt like I've been letting them down but it's going to come around. I've only played 25 games and it's just a matter of time until I bust out."

Pittsburgh scored seven runs in the first two innings against Shawn Chacon (0-1), who made his second major league start.

"He really didn't command his fastball the way you want to," Rockies manager Buddy Bell said.

Omar Olivares (2-3) won in his longest outing of the season, allowing three runs, three hits and five walks in seven innings.

Scott Sauerbeck and Joe Beimel combined for hitless relief.

Ramirez started a streak of three consecutive doubles that led to four runs in the first. He was followed by John Vander Wal and Warren Morris. Derek Bell started the rally with a one-out walk and Brian Giles singled.

Ramirez's double in the second inning cleared the bases after two walks and third baseman Greg Norton's fielding error. Ramirez is 12-for-27 (.444) with runners in scoring position.

Vander Wal hit a two-run double in the sixth off Ron Villone. Jason Kendall opened the inning with a double, and Giles hit a single.

Colorado had the bases loaded with one out in the first but managed only one run. Olivares forced in the run when he issued his third walk of the inning, to Norton.

"We kind of let him off the hook there," Buddy Bell said. "Omar battles you pretty good. Sometimes he can't find the strike zone early but if you let him stay around he'll get into a pretty good groove."

The Rockies added two runs in the fourth after Olivares walked one batter and hit another. Pinch-hitter Brooks Kieschnick doubled and the second run scored on Juan Pierre's groundout.

It was a season high in runs for the Pirates, who entered the game last in runs in the NL.

Game notes
Chacon lasted 1 1-3 innings and threw 39 pitches, only 17 for strikes. His ERA after two games is 17.55. ... The Rockies had won six consecutive games in Pittsburgh. ...
